I’m always using analogies to make sense of life and Mr. Greene is the sweetest to go along with them, even if they don’t make the most sense.

As you know, we have been thinking a lot about electricity at our house and an analogy came to me today. Electricity is like a stagehand in a play. Without them the play could not move smoothly from scene to scene and because of how well they work, we never even think about them being there behind the curtains.

Electricity is like that. That is, until the bill arrives in the mail. I hate receiving bills so much I have been known to avoid them and even ignore them. (Note to you, dear reader: this is very bad. I do not advise you try this at home.)

Let’s face it, opening bills is like opening up a big can of W – A — . All that is waiting for you is judgement: “You spent how much???”Wouldn’t it be nice to open a bill that said, “Good job! You’re awesome! You have more money in your bank account!”

I found a great alternative for electricity: prepaid electricity. Get this – you pay for your electricity ahead of time and use it up so at the end of the month you can see how good you’ve been. And Mr. Greene says, “Good job, Mrs. Greene!”

We’re pretty sure the word “renegade” was first used in Texas. Yep, this great state is home to the most proud and independent. What does this have to do with electricity? Well, did you know electricity is deregulated in this great state. Deregulated – That means no one can tell you who to buy your electricity from. You get to pick your electricity provider regardless if you buy it after you use it, or if you buy it before you use it.

Texans consider themselves the “free-est” in this great Land of the Free, and when it comes to electricity, they aren’t wrong. With prepaid electricity plans, anyone with an address can get access to electricity. You don’t have to have your credit checked, and you don’t have to come up with a big chunk of money for a down payment before you can get your home connected. In fact, if any prepaid electric company asks for a deposit, keep looking! There are a plethora of options that will hook you up almost immediately. The best can do it in about a day or less.

I advise you choose a prepaid electricity company who provides notifications via text messages and e-mail in the event you’ve used a little more than you planned for. This will easily avoid your service from being disconnected when you need to use a little extra. Who doesn’t prefer a gentle reminder to add a little money for some extra electricity over a big judgy bill that accuses you of overspending again?!

Prepaid electricity lets you stay in control of your budget. Budgets can sometimes feel fluid but prepaid electric slows down the flow. And given how many appliances we have at the Greene house, it really helps Mr. Greene and me teach our kids very tangible ways to save money.

The best electric companies allow you to monitor your daily usage, energy costs, and account balance all from your smartphone. At the end of the month they will even send you a statement detailing your prior month’s payments, charges, and savings history. Aren’t these some awesome learning tools for our kids? Instead of yelling at them to turn off the lights, Mr. Greene and I can motivate their intrinsic desire to save money – or at the very least, show them there is more money to spend on some new clothes!

Go check out prepaid electricity. It will brighten your day!
